ABOUT ME

Allan Hall commenced his tertiary music studies by attending the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 1986.  After 10 years, Allan had graduated with a Diploma, Graduate Diploma and Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium and a Master of Music postgraduate degree in Cello Performance from the Canberra School of Music, Australian National University.  In 2006 Allan also received a Graduate Diploma in Instrumental Pedagogy from the University of Queensland.

Allan has played in many orchestras including the Australian Youth Orchestra, the Queensland Philharmonic and Queensland Symphony Orchestras, the new The Queensland Orchestra when both former orchestras were amalgamated, and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra.  In 1994 he toured North Queensland with British pianist Anthony Peebles as part of a program by the Queensland Arts Council.  In 1997 he toured with a small group of singers and instrumentalists with Opera Queensland.  For the two years of 2004 and 2005 Allan toured with the Offenbach Trio to Norfolk Island as part of the ‘Opera in the Ruins’ series of concerts with Operatif and in 2007 with the Offenbach Trio to St George for the Queensland Arts Council.  Most recently another QAC/Offenbach tour to Jimbour House (Dalby) was completed.  The Dvorak and Elgar cello concertos were performed in 2006 and 2009 respectively with the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra.  In 2008 with the BSO Strings, Allan performed his Double Cello Concerto.

In 2010 with pianist Tertia Hogan, Allan formed EnHarmonie Chamber Ensemble, an organisation which creates and performs musical projects.  Recent projects include ‘Clara Schumann – a life story’, and a series of WW1 concerts featuring composers and poets of the 1914-1919 era.

Allan has conducted various community orchestras and one of them, Mandolins in Brisbane has produced two CD’s titled ‘Italian Mandolins, 15 Songs of Romantic Italy’ and the self-titled ‘Mandolins in Brisbane’.  Composing is another interest and Allan has published (via Len Fischer Music, Canberra) a Recessional for Organ (Op6 no2).  Six works for string orchestra have been performed and are awaiting publication.  Allan is also an active member of MAGA (Music Arrangers Guild of Australia), acting as arranger or copyist for other local composers.

When Allan is not practising his cello, teaching, performing, studying, conducting, or arranging, he delves into computers, sound technology, chess, aircraft, classic cars, and the occasional playing of the Er-hu (2-stringed Chinese fiddle).  He sometimes sleeps.
